What is layered security and defense in depth? Well, we're going to talk about that here. Layered security and defense in depth, these are foundational concepts in cybersecurity. They emphasize the need for multiple layers of defense. If you're building a castle, you want a bunch of walls, a bunch of moats against a wide range of threats. Although they're often used interchangeably, we've got different aspects of each. We'll talk about those here. Layered security, so this is also known as layered defense. It refers to the practice of using multiple security measures to protect the various components of an organization's IT environment. The idea is that if one layer falls, others will continue to provide necessary defense. So you build multiple walls around your castle. Key aspects, you have diverse protection strategies. So you have different security measures. You could have firewalls, I mean, physical protection, antivirus software, intrusion detection systems. So you're doing everything, right? You want to do it all so that you've got a diverse variety of this. Think about the human body. We get exposed to different viruses, germs all the time. The body then creates defenses against all of those. Comprehensive coverage, we want to ensure that all aspects of the IT environment, from hardware, software, network data, even people, they're protected. And what is defense in depth? On the contrary, like we said, similar. It's a strategy that implements multiple layers of defense across the physical, technical, and administrative domains to create a comprehensive, holistic security posture. What are the key aspects here? So this goes beyond technical solution to include policies, procedures, and physical controls.
